I have a love-hate relationship with the Kingdome. On the one hand, I saw many Seattle Sounders (soccer), Mariners (baseball) and Seahawks (football) games there. On the other hand, I had the living daylights scared out of me on May 2, 1996. I was watching a Seattle Mariner’s game in the Kingdome, when an earthquake hit. It sounded like everyone in the entire stadium started stomping their feet at the same time – except that nobody was standing. Within seconds, everyone in the Kingdome looked up at the same time, because the Kingdome had a nasty little secret. The 26 pound ceiling tiles began falling off the ceiling a couple years before (fortunately when there was no one in the stadium, although two construction workers were killed during the retrofitting). As soon as we all realized no ceiling tiles were going to fall, we all exited in a calm and orgnaized manor… yeah right, we bolted for the exits. Needless to say, I was happy to hear the Kingdome was going to be demolished in 2000. And now I collect postcards from that bygone era with the “hamburger” in SoDo.
